The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) women's tennis team was selected to finish first in the 2020 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Women's Tennis Preseason Poll as voted on by the league's member head coaches.
CMS notched seven first place votes and 63 points and was slated to finish first in the 2020 SCIAC Preseason Poll. The Athenas posted a sensational 27-2 overall record in 2019 and finished a perfect 7-0 in conference play, en route to the top seed in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament, and culminating with a tournament title. After receiving the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Championship and a first round bye, CMS downed Texas-Dallas (6-0), Pomona-Pitzer (5-1), Carnegie Mellon (5-1), and Middlebury (5-2), before falling to Wesleyan (Conn.), 5-4 in the NCAA Division III Championship match.
After earning the second seed in the conference postseason tournament a year ago, Pomona-Pitzer was tabbed to finish second in the league in 2020. The Sagehens received 57 points and a first place vote in the preseason voting after posting a 16-6 overall ledger, and a 6-1 mark in SCIAC play last season. After besting Caltech, 5-0 in the semifinals of the conference tournament, Pomona-Pitzer then fell to CMS in the title match, 5-0. The Sagehens received an at-large bid to the NCAA postseason and defeated Trinity (Texas), 5-1 in the opening round before falling to the Athenas, 5-1 in the second round.
Placing third and fourth in the SCIAC standings a year ago, Caltech and Redlands logged 44 and and 42 points respectively in the preseason vote ahead of the 2020 season. The Beavers, who tabbed a 10-7 overall record and a 5-2 league mark, earned the third seed in the conference tournament and fell to Pomona-Pitzer in the semifinals of the conference playoffs. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, turned an 8-12 overall slate in 2019 and earned the fourth seed with a 4-3 record in league play. Redlands fell to CMS in the semifinals of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.
Chapman (31 points) was voted to finish fifth in the standings in 2020 after posting a 3-13 (2-5 SCIAC) ledger a year ago, while California Lutheran received 25 points in the preseason vote after notching a 14-6 overall record and a 3-4 mark in conference play. Whittier (14 points) and Occidental (12 points) rounded out the preseason vote for the 2020 season.
The Spring portion of the SCIAC women's tennis season begins Friday, January 17 when CMS takes on Division II Hawai'i Pacific in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
