2019 SCIAC Volleyball All-Conference Teams Announced

The 2019 All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Women's Volleyball teams were announced Monday following a vote conducted by the league's member head coaches.

For the second time in as many seasons, the SCIAC Athlete of the Year went to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) senior setter Phoebe Madsen. Madsen helped guide the Athenas to a third straight out-right regular season conference championship, and CMS's fifth straight capturing at least a share of the regular season title. Madsen registered 377 assists in conference action during the 2019 regular season, averaging 6.50 assists per set. She also logged 109 kills and 201 digs, notching 1.88 kills and 3.12 digs per set respectively. In addition, the Santa Barbara, Calif. native is also second in the conference in service aces with 29 as she helped the Athenas to a 15-1 record in league action and the top seed in the upcoming conference postseason tournament. In seven of 16 conference matches, Madsen registered 25-or more assists and added double-digit digs in all but five league tilts in 2019. Madsen is now a two-time SCIAC Athlete of the Year, and a two-time First Team All-SCIAC honoree.

2019 SCIAC Newcomer of the Year honors went to Chapman first-year libero/defensive specialist Cat Helgeson. Helgeson ranked second in the league in digs (355) against conference competition during her debut campaign and first in digs per set at 6.34. She was also tied for sixth in service aces with 21 as the Panthers posted a 14-2 record in SCIAC play and notched the second seed in the upcoming conference postseason tournament. In her inaugural season, Helgeson logged double-digit digs in 11 of 16 matches against SCIAC foes, including a collegiate career-high 32 in a 3-1 win over Whittier on Oct. 8 en route to also earning Second Team All-SCIAC recognition.

Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong of Pomona-Pitzer was voted the 2019 SCIAC Character Award winner in addition to earning a second team all-conference nod. A senior from Falls Church, Va. Addo-Ashong is not only a great volleyball player, she is an All-American triple jumper (fourth) and placed 12th at nationals in the 100-meter hurdles. Aside from being a dual-sport athlete and being a co-captain for both teams, she has earned the Pomona-Pitzer Athletic Excellence Award the past two years, and is extremely active on campus. She serves on SAAC, ASPC Residence Life Committee, President's Advisory Committee in Sexual Violence Prevention & Intervention, and is a two-time member of the SCIAC All-Academic Team in both sports. In addition, she was also named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. Vicky is also a research assistant with the Minerva Research Initiative, is a Pomona College Tour Guide, chaired the ASPC Campus Sports Committee, and most recently served as a communications intern with the Nuclear Energy Institute.

In his sixth season as head coach of the Caltech women's volleyball program, 2019 SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year honors went to Tom Gardner and the Beavers' staff. Gardner led the Beavers to a 10-16 overall record during the year, highlighted by a 4-12 mark in conference competition. Since taking over the program in 2014, Gardner and the Beavers posted their best finish to a season (10-16, 4-12 SCIAC) and also had their first all-conference selection this year (Lauren Li - second team all-conference).
